Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's smallest parks, yet within its 325 km² it moves from dense groundwater forest to open acacia woodland, grassy floodplain, and the shimmering soda lake itself, all beneath the towering wall of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. It's best known for its rare tree-climbing lions, large elephant herds, and flocks of flamingos that can number in the tens of thousands.

A small park with an outsized variety of habitats
Roughly two-thirds of Lake Manyara National Park is the alkaline lake itself, but the remaining land packs in groundwater forest, acacia woodland, floodplain, and the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. That density of habitat, in a park you can drive end to end in a few hours, is what makes it such an efficient stop on a longer circuit.
Success comes down to visiting between November and April for the biggest flamingo flocks, and keeping an eye on the acacia branches for Manyara's famous tree-climbing lions.

The Approach

Lake Manyara sits along the sealed road from Arusha toward Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, close to the village of Mto wa Mbu, making it an easy stop of a few hours or an overnight on the way through rather than a separate journey.
