Ngorongoro Crater — a whole ecosystem inside one collapsed volcano.

Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, unfilled volcanic caldera, its 260 km² floor enclosed by walls that rise roughly 600 metres above the plain. Grassland, swamp, forest, and a soda lake are all packed inside the rim, holding one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, and one of the most reliable places on the continent to find all of the Big Five in a single day.

Famous for its unbroken crater walls, dense Big Five sightings, the endangered black rhino, and sweeping views from the rim.

Why It Matters

A natural enclosure that concentrates the wildlife you came to see

The crater's steep, unbroken walls keep most resident wildlife on the floor year-round, so game viewing stays strong even in the dry season when animals elsewhere disperse in search of water. It's one of the few places left where the endangered black rhino can still be seen with real consistency.

Success comes down to an early descent to the crater floor, ahead of the midday convoy of vehicles, and a guide who knows where the resident prides and rhino have been holding.

The Approach

A rim-top base with a descent to the crater floor

Ngorongoro sits within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, further along the same road that runs from Arusha past Lake Manyara toward the Serengeti. Lodges and camps perch along the forested rim, and vehicles descend a steep access road each morning to reach the crater floor.

Timing the Descent

An early start down to the crater floor beats the midday build-up of vehicles at the main sightings.

How We Time It

We often build Ngorongoro in as a full crater-floor day, based on the rim, between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara or Tarangire.

Often called Africa's Garden of Eden for the density of wildlife inside its walls.

Worth Planning Around

Key factors for a strong Ngorongoro itinerary.
  • Early descent to beat vehicle congestion
  • Fixed number of vehicles allowed on the floor
  • Pairing the visit with a rim-top overnight

A single enclosed caldera offering some of Africa's most concentrated game viewing.

Grassland, forest & soda lake, walled in by rock.

The crater floor opens into wide grass plains grazed by wildebeest and zebra, broken by the yellow-barked acacia of Lerai Forest and the shallow, alkaline waters of Lake Magadi. Above it all, the crater rim rises as a continuous green wall, holding the whole ecosystem inside a single natural amphitheatre.

  • Open grass plains
  • Lerai acacia forest
  • Gorigor swamp
  • Alkaline Lake Magadi
  • Forested crater rim
  • Ngoitokitok springs

The enclosed terrain concentrates wildlife into a compact area that's rarely matched elsewhere on the continent.
