Mikumi National Park is Tanzania's fourth largest, and by far its easiest to reach — a paved road puts you inside the park just a few hours from Dar es Salaam. At its heart lies the Mkata Floodplain, an open grassy plain so reminiscent of the Serengeti that it's often called Tanzania's "mini-Serengeti," home to tree-climbing lions, big herds of buffalo and zebra, and some of the country's best eland sightings.

Why It Matters

Mikumi connects directly onto the Selous/Nyerere Game Reserve, the Uluguru Mountains, and the Udzungwa Mountains, forming part of an ecosystem covering more than 75,000 km². Unlike Tanzania's more remote southern parks, it sits right alongside the sealed Dar es Salaam–Iringa highway, making it the most accessible piece of that wilderness.

Getting there is the easy part
A drive of roughly four to four-and-a-half hours from Dar es Salaam along the sealed Tanzam Highway brings you straight into the park, which the road itself bisects. Mikumi is also reachable by short charter flight or by rail, making it a natural first stop or weekend add-on.
